Avatars — what they tell us about ourselves

In games like Platform Racing 2, players are able to use avatars to play the game. Each player can create an avatar in an image that they like, something that either represents the player in the physical world, or an image that means something to them. As such, avatars are incredibly personal and can say a lot about a person’s dreams, hopes and desires.
It’s not just games like Platform Racing 2 that give gamers the scope to create and use avatars. A form of avatar has been in existence in role-playing games for decades. For instance, Dungeons and Dragons involves each player creating an entire character and persona from scratch, playing as this being. While this is more physical, the concept of an avatar is likely to have stemmed from such games. World of Warcraft, the obvious followup, also provides players with the ability to play as a created character, giving a sense of ownership and adding a far more immersive element to gaming.
It’s gamification features like these that can be added via the services offered by companies like Pley. With game providers in constant competition to create more compelling games, allowing players to customize their own avatars is a strong option to do just that.
